Outside Living

Maybe it’s because we spend several months indoors, but in the last decade or so, Minnesota has taken to outdoor rooms with a passion. We’re building plenty of outdoor spaces, from kitchens to screened porches, from fire-lit conversation pits to multi-layered decks that adapt for entertaining and relaxing. (You can see our latest outdoor creation, complete with pizza oven, on this Spring’s Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase.)

So, if you’re ready to bring the joys of outdoor living to your home, right now is the perfect time to start planning. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

Cooking al Fresco The old charcoal grill may still be your favorite for charring a good steak, but why stop there. A well-planned outdoor kitchen will include your favorite
cooking appliance, from charcoal and gas grills to wood-burning ovens. You’ll also want to ensure an easy-clean surface for prep and enclosed cabinets for storing tools and your I’m the BBQ King apron.

Outdoor Entertaining Whether your idea of a backyard party is a quiet evening with the family or hosting the neighborhood Night Out party, you’ll want to create
one or more comfortable seating and eating areas. Start with decking to create a comfortable transition from indoors to out. Multiple levels can provide distinct gathering and dining areas, and maybe even a hot tub. You might want a gazebo or pergola set away from the house for more intimate conversations. You’ll also want to consider a screened-in space where you can enjoy being outdoors long into the evening (this is Minnesota after all).

Fire & Water Who doesn’t love the sound of a crackling fire in the evening? Or maybe a pool to keep the kids busy? Your outdoor spaces can include a dramatic outdoor fireplace (add a pizza oven for dual enjoyment). And, open firepits and streamlined fire pots are making dramatic statements in many backyards. In ground pools are also gaining ground, as well as fountains, ponds and waterfalls. Just remember, avoid standing water or your backyard will become a mosquito nursery in no time.

When you’re ready to extend your home into the great outdoors, my team would love to help. Remember, at Destiny Homes we promise to deliver what you need on budget, on time and stress-free from the first conversation through the final walkthrough and beyond.
