Now is a Great Time to Remodel
As published in Deephaven Magazine February 2019
Timing is everything. So now that the kids have flown the nest, it’s the perfect window for you to transform your kid-friendly home into an adult haven just for you.
But don’t wait too long. According to a Pew Research Center study in 2016, more 18 to 34-year-olds live with their parents than in any other living arrangement. And, the online job company, Indeed, surveyed millennials and found that 36 percent of graduating seniors planned to live at home for at least a year after graduation.
But is it healthy for these boomerang adults to come back home? A recent study by the London School of Economics found that “when adult children return to live with their parents [there’s a] significant decline in the parents’ quality of life and well-being.”
So go on, take the plunge and try some of our favorite empty nester remodeling projects before it’s too late. And, remember, you can still offer them a nice guest space for holiday weekends.
Our Favorite Empty Nester Remodeling Projects
Bedroom Suite Retreat: Often there’s an adjacent kid’s bedroom you can commandeer to become your own relaxing sitting room with a coffee bar and compact refrigerator. Even better, make it your new spa bath with pampering treats like a big soaker tub, steam room, and why not add a rain shower with multiple heads and soothing massagers.
Basement Party Room: Most parents find the lower level is a great place to keep the growing kids out of their hair. But now that they’re gone, it can become your play space. You could add that English Pub bar you’ve always wanted or home to your future poker den? How about adding your own private sauna, a great way to ease pain, reduce stress and improve cardiovascular health.
Wine Cellar: Whether you favor a stone-lined grotto or a sleek modern wine wall, now is the time to start building your collection and treat yourself to a beautiful place to store and enjoy those buttery Chardonnays or velvety Cabernets.
Hobby/Exercise Room: Transforming the old play room into a space to keep you active as you near retirement is both fun and smart. Plenty of studies show that keeping active, both physically and mentally will keep you young longer. So, no matter what you love to do, now is the time to make the right space for it.
